A recent article in the Tampa Tribune reinforces the idea that any driver can be guilty of distracted driving, and it only takes a moment for these habits to cause an accident. Ryan Leiker was driving down the road, slowing down to make a left turn. He had his blinker on, but the driver behind him wasn’t paying attention and hit the rear of Leiker’s vehicle hard enough to cause an estimated $20,000 in damage.
At first glance, there is nothing unusual about the accident. Dozens of identical accidents occur on U.S. roadways each month, but in this case, the negligent driver was an on-duty police officer.
Leiker Is Suing The Officer And The City For Injuries He Received In The Car Accident
Although no citation was issued to the officer, named Michael Braband, an internal reprimand was processed which confirmed that Braband was at fault in the accident. The reprimand also includes a description of the accident, explaining that Braband received a message on his computer and decided to read the message while driving at 40 miles per hour.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that it is not standard practice to issue driving citations to on-duty police officers. Instead, the matter is handled internally. Interestingly, there was no mention of the computer in the original police report, which may have made the lawsuit more difficult if the reprimand report had not come to light.
