In most accidents that involve a tractor-trailer, the blame lies with the driver of the truck. People tend to blame truck drivers because of assumptions about how little they’ve slept and how distracted they are behind the wheel.

We’ve all heard stories about truck drivers taking drugs to make unreasonable deadlines, but the truth of it is that those cases are few and far between. The majority of truck drivers are responsible, and they can certainly become the victims of negligent drivers.

A recent car accident in Florida shows exactly what happens when a negligent driver causes an accident with a tractor-trailer. First Coast News reports that the driver of a refrigeration truck was merging onto a highway when he hit a Honda.

In the world of car accidents, tractor-trailer accidents are the most destructive. These large trucks can legally weigh up to 80,000 pounds. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average weight of a car is 4,079 pounds.

hit and run

The disparity between these two numbers should give you some idea of the destruction that occurs in a tractor-trailer collision. In many cases, these accidents resemble crashes between cars and trains more than the typical traffic accident.

Oftentimes, the accidents occur because of negligent driving. Tractor-trailer drivers are usually on very tight schedules, requiring them to drive for long hours at a time. It’s not unusual for drivers to exceed the federal rest guidelines in order to make a delivery on time.

car-accident-pickup-truck-smashed-into-houseHOLLYWOOD – A pickup truck caught fire with a trapped passenger on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. It happened on the Florida Turnpike. 20 year old Evan Hanna ran to the scene of the accident and saved the life of the driver of the truck. The truck accident happened when the truck went off the northbound lanel, hit a fence, and struck two parked cars before finally crashing into a house. The accident happened just after 1pm.

Now, people worry sometimes that if they try to help and they make a mistake, they could be liable for any damage they cause. But don’t worry, because Florida has a good samaritan law that tracks common sense and gives immunity from any civil liability for trying to help under an emergency situation.  We will cover that in another post.

West Palm Beach Auto AccidentWEST PALM BEACH – Tragically, a woman died on the Florida Turnpike Friday, December 14, 2012 near the Okeechobee Boulevard exit in Palm Beach. It happened at 5 a.m. The associated press reports that the Florida Highway Patrol said that she tried to avoid a crash in front of her but was struck by a vehicle behind her. The accident caused the southbound lanes to close.

And, The Palm Beach Post reports that a pickup truck driver hit the median concrete wall in the center of the highway.  He spun and ended stopped in the road.  The woman who unfortunately died was driving a Mazda and may have hit that truck or stopped just before hitting it. Then, unfortunately, another pickup truck slammed into her, in what appears to be the accident that caused her to pass away. She expired at the hospital. The first  driver was also taken to the hospital. The police, Florida Highway Patrol, will continue to investigate.
